History of the School Photo Gallery Anniversary Events Milestones

Milestones

1951
Lee Bivins persuades his sister-in-law, Margaret Teel to undertake teaching Kindergartners at the recently built St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. He recruits the students and provides the supplies.

1961
The Board undertakes a study of Kindergarten through 6th grade schools and determines that it is appropriate to add a grade a year beginning in 1963.

1965
4th grade is added and departmentalized teaching begins for grades 4 and above, with teachers for language arts, social studies, math and science.

1967
The first 6th grade class graduates in May.

1970
Mr. W.M. Nickell begins as Headmaster.

1977
A second 1st grade class is added and each year thereafter another grade is added with the idea that once there are two classes in each grade, the School will expand to include a junior high.

1979
The inaugural 6th grade trip to Washington D.C.

1980
The first computer lab is put in place.

1981
Mr. Nickell retires and Connie Wootton is named as Headmistress.

1985
In September, more than 1,000 people participate in the ground breaking for the new school building.

1986
The school year begins in the new building.

1989
Students publish the School’s first yearbook and dedicate it to Miss Margaret Teel.

1989
The School is accredited by the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools.

1990
The very first 8th grade class graduates.

1994
Alexis Anderson writes A Prayer for St. Andrew’s School. It continues to be used in chapel services to this day.

1996
National Junior Honor Society is established at St. Andrew’s.

1997
St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church burns. For the next six years, the Church will use the School gymnasium for services as well as other parish activities.

1998
Groundbreaking for the Margaret Teel Early Childhood Building.

1999
The Margaret Teel Early Childhood Building opens and is dedicated on Grandparents’ Day.

2002
Connie Wootton retires as Headmistress. Scott Kimball serves as Headmaster for the next two years.

2004
Ron Ferguson is hired as Headmaster.

2005
The first annual Fine Arts Night.

2007
The Legacy Capital Campaign is launched.

2008
The Legacy Campaign is complete. The Middle School, art and music classrooms are finished and renovated spaces, including the library and gymnasium are ready for use.

2011
St. Andrew’s Episcopal School of Amarillo celebrates its 60th Anniversary.
