St. Andrew’s Episcopal School was founded in 1951 by Betty and Lee Bivins. Their intent was to provide the children of Amarillo with the opportunity to attend Kindergarten in a faith-based environment.
As the years passed, the School grew and in 1961 a study group was formed to explore the possibility of expanding the School to include Grades 1 – 6, as well as Kindergarten. The decision was that such rapid expansion was too risky. Instead, the leadership decided to grow the School slowly, adding one grade level each year. 1st Grade was added in 1962, 2nd Grade in 1963 and so on. The School’s first 8th Grade class graduated in 1990.
As the School grew both in size and reputation, so did the need for facilities. The first classes were taught in the education wing of the St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church building. As enrollment grew, new spaces were allocated but it soon became clear that the School needed its own space. In 1985 the original school building was complete. In 1999, the Margaret Teel Early Childhood Center was added and in 2007, the 2nd floor of that facility was finished out. Renovations of various types have enabled improvements to the buildings over the years.
The School has been blessed with consistent and dedicated leadership during its almost 60 years. The School has had only five Heads during this time: Miss Margaret Teel, Mr. W.M. Nickell, Mrs. Connie Wootton, Mr. Scott Kimball, and the current Head, Mr. Ron Ferguson.
Today, the School is growing and thriving. Enrollment is on the rise and the success of our program is evident in our students and alumni. The School is respected and valued throughout the community. We have many supporters who understand the impact of being able to offer incoming residents and businesses a choice for quality education. Though the School has changed much in recent years, we remain committed to our mission and to our principles of academic excellence, faith and fellowship, and service.
