At the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools Biennial Conference in Houston, TX on November 7-8, 2009, St. Andrew’s Episcopal School was named a recipient of the Ken Bastian Award for outstanding community service.
The School has, over the last several years, been actively engaged in growing and enhancing its service learning program. Today, all students at St. Andrew’s have the opportunity to participate in age-appropriate, meaningful service opportunities. Additionally, the outreach activities and programs are integrated into the rigorous academic environment.
The Executive Board of the Southwestern Association of Episcopal Schools established the Ken Bastian Award in 1999 in honor of the late Dr. Kenneth H. Bastian, Jr., former Headmaster of All Saints Episcopal School of Lubbock, Texas and member of the Executive Board of SAES for eight years. As Headmaster of All Saints, Bastian was instrumental in establishing a community service and service learning program that brought national recognition to the school. This award is presented each year to a member school of the Association that has established an exemplary means of encouraging students to give of themselves in some form of community service or service learning.
According to Ron Ferguson, “At St. Andrew’s, our vision is to positively impact society by empowering our students with wisdom, courage, and faith. Within our accelerated academic environment, we provide many opportunities for our students to participate in community service projects that benefit local, regional, national, and even international communities. We find that when students are personally involved in projects like the Community Food Bank and Heifer International, they begin to understand that life is not about what you get; it is about what you give.”
