Bluebonnet Season is here and this year St. Andrew’s has had outstanding participation in the program. Over 65% of the students in Grades 3-5 read at least five of the 20 books included on the Texas Bluebonnet list. 28 students read 10 of the books, and 12 students read a remarkable 15 or more of this year’s Bluebonnet books.
Here at St. Andrew’s and all over the state of Texas, the overwhelming winner for the 2009 – 2010 Blue Bonnet Book of the Year is Help Me Mr. Mutt by Janet Stevens and Susan Crummel Stevens.
The Texas Bluebonnet Awardis a state-wide reading program that was established in 1979 to encourage Texas children to read more books, explore a variety of current books, develop powers of discrimination, and identify their favorite books. In order to vote for the Texas Bluebonnet Book, a student must have read at least five of the twenty books on the list. “The Bluebonnet program is a wonderful way to encourage students to read not only some of the best new literature but also a wider variety of authors and genres” says Librarian Ginger Smith.
Bluebonnet participant Rebecca Cunningham (3rd Grade) didn’t vote for Help Me Mr. Mutt but rather Someone Name Eva by Joan M. Wolf. She does, however, love being part of the Bluebonnet Program. For Rebecca, reading is a way to escape, to visit new places and meet new people and the Bluebonnet books are very good reads.
As a way to celebrate their accomplishments, participating students are able to take part in festivities such as ice cream socials and special lunches. The BlueBonnet Bash held in February was for all 60 participating readers and it featured some wonderful desserts and treats. Next up was the Banana Split Bonanza for the 28 students who read 10 or more Blue Bonnet Books. And finally, Blue Sky Restaurant was voted as the burger place to be for the book readers that read 15 or more Bluebonnet books. This great off-campus lunch day took place on February 25th.
Congratulations to all our Bluebonnet Readers. Way to Go.
