Career Week Inspires Students
An artist, an illustrator, a Marine, an athlete, a scientist, and a pilot; these are just a few of the many different professionals that came and spoke to students here at St. Andrew’s during Career Week. Career Week was designed to expose students to a variety of career fields and professions. The goal was not only to educate students about future opportunities, but to take it one step further and help students understand that they can be anything they want to when they grow up. “Experiences like this can hook a student's mind and help motivate them to work hard toward a goal or career they are passionate about.” said Assistant Headmaster Janie Thamer who organized the multi-faceted program.

In addition to a number of onsite visits, younger students also traveled to the National Weather Service, TAC Airpark, the American Quarter horse Museum, and the Great Harvest Bread Company. Students in grades 3 – 5 participated in small group experiences in which they visited a local business. Professionals participating in this part of the program included Shelton’s Florist, Amarillo Little Theatre, KABUKI Restaurant, Belmar Bakery, Wonderland Amusement Park, Jack Sorenson Art Studio, Stewart Stained Glass and more.

Middle School students were paired with local professionals for a “shadow day” based upon their own individual interests. Shadowing experiences took place with individuals in the medical and financial fields as well as caterers, non-profit employees, news anchors, the military, veterinarians, architects, engineers and more.

The week culminated with “Dream Job Day” in which students were encouraged to dress up as a professional in their dream job. There were mathematicians and scientists, artists and actors, ballerinas and cowboys, bakers and bankers and much, much, more. The day provided students with a chance to give voice to their dreams as well as to share and learn more about who their classmates are and what they want to be when they grow up.
