On Saturday, October 24th the St. Andrew’s Broncos won the West Texas Christian Athletic Association Football Championship by defeating the team from Lubbock’s Kingdom Preparatory Academy by a score of 46 – 20. This win completes the Broncos perfect season – with a record of 6 and 0.
The Bronco defense had three goal line stands to hold Kingdom Prep scoreless in the first half. The offense got things kicked off with a 60 yard touchdown pass which was quickly followed by a 68 yard touchdown pass on the first play of the next possession. Half-time score 20-0. There were two huge kickoff returns for touchdowns in the second half putting the game out of reach for Kingdom Prep.
Team members include 8th graders Thomas Britt, Taylor Burgess, Preston Howard Charlie Meyer, Quenton Philips, Lauren Pronger, and Tate Smith; 7th graders Tony Astuto and Jaden Johnson; and 6th graders Miles Bivins, Andy Ellis, Matthew Gabel; Grant Hughes, Ben Juba, Will Stroud, and Brandon Wright. The team’s coach was Mr. Rance Barnett.
According to Coach Barnett, “The key to our success this year was great team work and leadership. Every player contributed to our success and the captains were great leaders on and off the field.” He followed this up by saying, “This is a special group of athletes. They never discuss individual goals or accomplishments it was always about the team and the goal we set for the season which was to win the championship.”
