For the third year in a row – St. Andrew’s has won the Pantex Regional Science Bowl. This year, St. Andrew’s entered three teams in the competition --Red, White and Blue -- and all did well. In the end, it was the Blue Team comprised of Thomas Britt, Sam Haddad, Drew Lindsey, Saahil Mehta, and Gaby Maliha; and coached by Middle School Science Teacher Sara Burkhard that took home the trophy and the check. As the winning team, these students will represent this region in the National Middle School Science Bowl held in Washington, D.C., April 30-May 5, 2009. They also earned $1,000 for the School’s science program. “We are proud of all three of our teams.” said Sara Burkhard. “They all performed very well. They went into the event with a great attitude and enjoyed the day and the competition.” The Red Team tied for 5th place and included Alex Armstrong, Joshua Beggs, Emilio Conde, Nikit Desai, and J.T. Hassell. The White Team tied for 6th place and was comprised of Charlie Meyer, Veronica Miles, Lauren Pronger, Tate Smith, and Rahel Tekeste. Teachers Randy Crutchfield (Middle School Math) and Ginny Green (4th/5th Grade Science) assisted the teams during the competition as well as during their training. This year twenty-three teams from 12 area middle and junior high schools competed in the Pantex science bowl, testing their science knowledge in a rapid-fire, question and answer format. The Science Bowl is operated much like the popular television game show “Jeopardy,” with the exception that students play on teams of four instead of individually. Round-robin games are held in the morning with division winners advancing to the double-elimination final rounds after lunch. Students’ science and math knowledge is challenged as they try to beat their opponents to the buzzer to answer questions on earth science, physical science, life science, general science and math. “Science Bowl is designed for students who love science and math,” said Debra Halliday, Science Bowl Coordinator. “It encourages students to excel in these tough subjects and puts their knowledge to the test. These young people and their coaches have been working hard for months to prepare. They have a great time competing.” More than 100 Pantex employees and other community volunteers work as scorekeepers, timers, judges and moderators during the event. “This event would be impossible without the wonderful volunteers. They do it to make Science Bowl a positive experience for these gifted students,” Halliday said. Other schools participating in this year’s Pantex Middle School Science Bowl were: Canyon Junior High Clarendon Junior High De Zavala Middle School Dumas Junior High Greenways Intermediate School Heritage Classical Academy Highland Park Middle School Lazbuddie Middle School Panhandle Junior High River Road Middle School San Jacinto Christian Academy
