Ron Ferguson came to St. Andrew’s in 2004 with a wealth of experience and a strong vision for the future of our School. In the short time Ron has been here, the School has reclaimed its prominence in Amarillo as well as the larger Panhandle region.
Mr. Ferguson has helped bring focus to the School in many areas, including small class size, worship several times a week, an extensive, curriculum-based service learning program, and creation of a shared vision for the future of the School. A strong advocate of progress, Ron has worked with the School’s Board of Trustees to create and implement a five-year strategic plan that identifies clear goals and approaches for moving St. Andrew’s forward in academics, faith, and service, as well as financial stability.
During his time here, Ron’s office has become an integral part of school life. It is an open and welcoming space that students of all ages feel comfortable entering to share something exciting about their day or an important accomplishment. Younger students visit Mr. Ferguson to sing new songs, count the jellybeans in the jar on his desk, or show him their artwork. Older students meet there to share their thoughts on class trips, extracurricular activities, or their role in the day- to-day life of the School. Mr. Ferguson’s vast cross collection is an eye-catching focal point of the room, and it brings many reflective and insightful comments from students and parents alike.
For Headmaster Ferguson, “It is the coming together of academic excellence and a faith-based environment that truly differentiates this School. Providing an atmosphere for learning in the classroom that is exciting and invigorating is essential. But St. Andrew's offers more than just an excellent environment for learning, it provides for spiritual development, in Chapel as well in classes. In today’s world, students do not exist in a vacuum---and discussions on faith and ethics are crucial to a child’s perception of the world around them.”
Prior to coming here, Mr. Ferguson was the Headmaster at Canterbury Episcopal School in the Dallas suburb of Desoto for more than 10 years. During his time at Canterbury, the School expanded from a small kindergarten program with only 12 students to a K-12 school, it received full accreditation; acquired thirty-six acres, and had an aggressive building program that resulted in the addition of three permanent buildings.
Ron also served as a public school principal, an administrator, and a teacher in several different schools. He began his career in the Army and also later worked with the Texas Department of Corrections. Ferguson studied at both the University of South Dakota and University of Iowa, majoring in English and Journalism. He later returned to school and received his Masters of Arts in School Administration.
Ron is extremely active in the educational community. He recently completed a four-year term as the President of The Southwest Association of Episcopal Schools, an organization he has been involved with for more than ten years, and he also serves on numerous committees for the Independent Schools Association of the Southwest.
Ron’s wife, Dru, is an Episcopal priest serving here in the diocese of Northwest Texas. Their son Todd (from whom Ron learned many life lessons about caring for the educational, spiritual, and emotional needs of children) and his wife, Shayna, live in Chicago.
| “What is unique about St. Andrew’s is the foundation it is built upon-its mission statement. Every day each student is presented a superior curriculum, an opportunity to express faith issues, and the ability to serve others and our world.” |
